Bearing in mind this was published in 1897 then certain aspects such as the layout of the record room at the General record office will be historical rather than current. However its discussion about various records and pedigrees is still relevant.

From Introduction to 2nd Edition: It is to a great extent an omnium gatherum of references and cross references, not only to the book itself, but of entries contained in various other works on the Records and of any odd references I have come across, especially in the old and practically unindexed folio Reports of the Record Commission, and which I thought may be useful to the general searcher. It may save the casual enquirer much trouble to know where to find some sort of a reference when he wants to find out something about ‘ contrariants’ or ‘ cowchers’ or ‘ Jornalia’ or ‘ Passage’ Rolls, or cannot make out who was the Master of Toyles, or what they did at the Court of the Verge. I hope that my efforts to indicate books likely to be of use to the reader will not be criticized too freely. There are, no doubt, many other works on each subject, and possibly several better than those I have recommended. That I. have not come across them is my misfortune, not my fault. If there were any demand for such a work, an antiquarian digest under subjects would not be very hard to compile.

Contents include:
How to compile a Pedigree
Signs, Abbreviations, and Terms used for Pedigrees

AUTHOR

John Greenleaf Whittier (December 17, 1807 – September 7, 1892) was an American Quaker poet and forceful advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. (see wikipedia).
Edited by W. GARRETT HORDER ( - 1922)

PUBLISHED

HENRY FROWDE, LONDON, EDINBURGH, GLASGOW NEW YORK AND TORONTO 1905

DESCRIPTION

OXFORD COMPLETE EDITION, THE POETICAL WORKS OF JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER WITH NOTES, INDEX OF FIRST LINES AND CHRONOLOGICAL LIST.

This is the first complete edition of the poetical works of JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER issued on the European side of the Atlantic. It is a reprint of the Cambridge Edition issued in 1894 by Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin & Co., of Boston. That was based on the Riverside Edition issued by the same house in America, and by Messrs. Macmillan & Co. in this country. For it, four years before his death, Mr. Whittier wrote introductions and head-notes, revised the text, arranged the poems in the order he thought best, and relegated to an appendix the poems he would, if the public had permitted, have allowed to pass into oblivion. He did indeed discard certain altogether. Up to that time therefore the Riverside was, in the poet’s judgment, the definitive edition of his works.

AUTHOR

Rev, Samuel Rutherford CROCKETT (M: 1860 Sep 24 - 1914 Apr 21), Samuel Rutherford Crockett (September 24, 1860 - April 16, 1914), was a Scottish novelist, born at Duchrae, Galloway, the son of a Galloway farmer. See wikipedia.

PUBLISHED

T Fisher Unwin, Paternoster Sq. London

DESCRIPTION

THE RAIDERS, Being, Some Passages in the Life of John Faa, Lord and Earl of Little Egypt: BY S. R. Crockett FOURTH EDITION

“The Scotch seem to be exerting themselves nobly in fiction. We have Mr. Stevenson and Mr. Barrie, and now Mr. Crockett, in * The Raiders,’ is making both of these authors look to their laurels. . . . ‘ The Raiders’ is a book difficult to lay down, a delightful book of adventure in a field untrodden by romance, in the wild, wild kingdom of Galloway. . . . Here we have a thoroughly enjoyable novel, full of fresh, original, and accurate pictures of life long gone by.”

” This is a book of full and rich texture, abounding in delightful incident and charming description, and wrought throughout with art and style.”

Foreward: I, Patrick Heron of Isle Rathan in Galloway’, begin the writing of my book with thanks to God, the Giver of all good, for the early and bountiful harvest which He has been pleased to give us here in little Scotland, in this year of His Grace, 17—. It is not the least of the Lord’s mercies that throughout all this realm, both hill-land and valley-land, the crops of corn, Merse wheat, Lowden oats, and Galloway bear, should be in the stackyards under thack and rape by the second day of September. So, with a long back-end before me, the mind running easy about the corn, and prices rising, I am not likely to get a better season of quiet to write down the things that befell us in those strange years when the hill outlaws collogued with the wild freetraders of the Holland traffic, and fell upon us to the destruction of the life of man, the carrying away of much bestial, besides the putting of many of His Majesty’s lieges in fear Now it will appear that there are many things in this long story which I shall have to tell concerning my self which are far from doing me credit, but let it not be forgotten that it was with me the time of wild oat sowing when the blood ran warm. Also these were the graceless, unhallowed days after the Great Killing, when the saints of God had disappeared from the hills of Galloway and Carrick, and when the fastnesses of the utmost hills were held by a set of wild cairds—cattle reivers and murderers, worse than the painted savages of whom navigators to the far seas bring us word. It was with May Mischief that all the terrible blast of storm began (as indeed most storms among men ever do begin with a bonny lass, like that concerning Helen of Troy, which lasted ten year and of which men speak to this day). The tale began with May Mischief as you shall hear. I keep the old name stilly though the years have gone by, and though now in any talks of the old days and of all our ancient ploys, there are the bairns to be considered. But it is necessary that ere the memory quite die out, some one of us who saw these things should write them down. Some, it is true, were deeper in than I, but none saw more or clearer, being so to speak at both the inception and the conclusion of the matter.

DESCRIPTION

WITH SA’DI IN THE GARDEN, OR, The Book of Love, BEING THE “ISHK” OR THIRD CHAPTER OF THE ” BÔSTÂN” OF THE PERSIAN POET SA’DI, FOURTH EDITION
Embodied in a dialogue held in the garden of the Taj Mahal, at Agra. In this work, which is dedicated to the Earl of Dufferin, the Author, after minutely describing the beautiful Tomb and surrounding Gardens of the Taj Mahal, introduces a group composed of a learned Mirza, two singing-girls with their attendant, and an Englishman, who pass the night in the Mosque attached to the famous Monument, reading the Chapter of Sa’di upon ” Love,” and conversing upon that theme, with accompaniments of music and dancing. The larger portion of the Book is original, and comprises, besides the included translations from Sa’di, many lyrical pieces in the Persian manner, sung by the accomplished musicians, and also several novel Oriental Tales illustrating the dialogue.

The sections in this poem taken directly from the Persian are printed in italics, and present the third chapter of the Bostan nearly as it stands in the text of Sa’di. The bulk of the poem is original, though some passages imitate the Persian manner. Utmost acknowledgments are due to the prose translation of ” The Garden,” by Capt. H. Wilberforce Clarke, E.E., one of the very best and most faithful ever made from an Oriental classic. Those familiar with Persian literature will be aware of certain necessary modifications. The accomplished singing-girls are types from the life.

AUTHOR

(Charles) Grant (Blairfindie) ALLEN (1848 Feb 24 - 1899 Oct 26)
Edited by Andrew LANG (1844 Mar 31 - 1912 Jul 20)

PUBLISHED

LONDON, LONGMANS, GREEN, AND CO. 1885

DESCRIPTION

IN this little volume I have endeavoured to present the life and work of Charles Darwin viewed as a moment in a great revolution, in due relation both to those who went before and to those who come after him. Recognising, as has been well said, that the wave makes the crest, not the crest the wave, I have tried to let my hero fall naturally into his proper place in a vast onward movement of the human intellect, of which he was himself at once a splendid product and a moving cause of the first importance. I have attempted to show him both as receiving the torch from Lamarck and Malthus, and as passing it on with renewed brilliancy to the wide school of evolutionary thinkers whom his work was instrumental in arousing to fresh and vigorous activity along a thousand separate and varied lines of thought and action.

AUTHOR

Samuel Horsley (source wikipedia) (London, 15 September 17334 October 1806 in Brighton) was an English divine.Entering Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he became LL.B. in 1758 without graduating in arts, and in the following year succeeded his father in the living of Newington Butts in Surrey. Horsley was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767; and secretary in 1773, but, in consequence of a difference with the president (Sir Joseph Banks) he withdrew in 1784. In 1768 he attended the eldest son of the 4th Earl of Aylesford to Oxford as private tutor; and, after receiving through the earl and Bishop Lowth various minor preferments, which by dispensations he combined with his first living, he was installed in 1781 as archdeacon of St Albans. As a bishop, Horsley was energetic both in his diocese, where he strove to better the position of his clergy, and in parliament. The efficient support which he afforded the government was acknowledged by his successive translations to Rochester in 1793, and to St Asaph in 1802. DESCRIPTION

(From Adverstisement and preface)
THE life of Charles the Fifth subsequently to his abdication is disposed of by Dr. Robertson in some six or seven pages. It did not, in truth, come strictly within the author’s plan, which proposed only a history of the reign of the emperor. But unfortunately these few pages contain many inaccuracies, and, among others, a very erroneous view of the interest which Charles, in his retirement, took in the concerns of the government. Yet it would be unjust to impute these inaccuracies to want of care in the historian, since he had no access to such authentic sources of information as would have enabled him to correct them. Such information was to be derived from documents in the archives of Simancas, consisting, among other things, of the orginial correspondence of the emperor and his household, and showing conclusively that the monarch, instead of remaining dead to the world in his retreat, took, not merely an interest, but a decided part, in the management of affairs. But in Robertson s day, Simancas was closed against the native as well as the foreigner ; and it is not until within a few years that the scholar has been permitted to enter its dusty recesses, and draw thence materials to illustrate the national history. It is particularly rich in materials for the illustration of Charles the Fifth’s life after his abdication. Availing themselves of the opportunities thus afforded, several eminent writers, both in England and on the Continent, have bestowed much pains in investigating a passage of history hitherto so little understood. The results of their labours they have given to the world in a series of elaborate works, which, however varying in details, all exhibit Charles’s character and conduct in his retirement in a very different point of view from that in which it has been usual to regard them. It was the knowledge of this fact which led the Publishers of the present edition of Robertson’s “Charles the Fifth” to request me to prepare such an account of his monastic life as might place before the reader the results of the recent researches in Simancas, and that in a more concise form—as better suited to the purpose for which it was designed—than had been adopted by preceding writers. I was the more willing to undertake the task, that my previous studies had made me familiar with the subject, and that I was possessed of a large body of authentic documents relating to it, copied from the originals in Simancas. These documents, indeed, form the basis of a chapter on the monastic life of Charles at the close of the first Book of the History of Philip the Second,—written, I may add, in the summer of 1851, more than a year previous to the publication of Mr. Stirling’s admirable work, which led the way, in the series of brilliant productions relating to the cloister life of Charles. In complying with the request of the Publishers, I have made the authentic records which I had received from Simancas the foundation of my narrative,—freely availing myself, at the same time, of the labours of my predecessors, especially of those of Mr. Stirling and M. Mignet, wherever they have thrown light on the path from sources not within my reach. In the performance of the task I have been insensibly led into a much greater length than I had originally intended, or than, I fear, will be altogether palatable to those who have become already familiar with the narrative in the writings of those who have preceded me. To such readers I cannot, indeed, flatter myself that I have given any information of importance beyond what they may have acquired from these more extended and elaborate works. But by far the larger part of readers in our community have probably had no access to these works; and I may express the hope that I have executed the task in such a manner as to satisfy any curiosity which, after perusing the narrative of the illustrious Scottish historian, they may naturally feel respecting the closing scenes in the life of the great Emperor. WILLIAM H. PRESCOTT. BOSTON, November 10, 1856.

PREFACE.
No period in the history of one’s own country can be considered as altogether uninteresting. Such transactions as tend to illustrate the progress of its constitution, laws, or manners, merit the utmost attention. Even remote and minute events are objects of a curiosity, which, being natural to the human mind, the gratification of it is attended with pleasure. But, with respect to the history of foreign states, we must set other bounds to our desire of information. The universal progress of science, during the last two centuries, the art of printing, and other obvious causes, have filled Europe with such a multiplicity of histories, and with such vast collections of historical materials, that the term of human life is too short for the study or even the perusal of them. It is necessary, then, not only for those who are called to conduct the affairs of nations, but for such as inquire and reason concerning them, to remain satisfied with a general knowledge of distant events, and to confine their study of history in detail chiefly to that period in which the several states of Europe having become intimately connected, the operations of one power are so felt by all as to influence their councils, and to regulate their measures. Some boundary, then, ought to be fixed in order to separate these periods. An era should be pointed out, prior to which each country, little connected with those around it, may trace its own history apart; after which, the  transactions of every considerable nation in Europe become interesting and instructive to all. With this intention I undertook to write the history of the Emperor Charles V. It was during his administration that the powers of Europe were formed into one great political system, in which each took a station, wherein it has since remained with less variation than could have been expected after the shocks occasioned by so many internal revolutions, and so many foreign wars. The great events which happened then have not hitherto spent their force. The political principles and maxims then established still continue to operate. The ideas concerning the balance of power then introduced, or rendered general, still influence the councils of nations. The age of Charles V. may therefore be considered as the period at which the political state of Europe began to assume a new form. I have endeavoured to render my account of it an introduction to the history of Europe subsequent to his reign. While his numerous biographers describe his personal qualities and actions ; while the historians of different countries relate occurrences, the consequences of which were local or transient, it hath been my purpose to record only those great transactions in his reign, the effects of which were universal, or continue to be permanent. As  y readers could derive little instruction from such a history of the reign of Charles V. without some information concerning the state of Europe previous to the sixteenth century, my desire of supplying this has produced a preliminary volume, in which I have attempted to point out and to explain the great causes and events to whose operation all the improvements in the political state of Europe, from the subversion of the Roman empire to the beginning of the sixteenth century, must be ascribed. I have exhibited a view of the progress of society in Europe, not only with respect to interior government, laws, and manners, but with respect to the command of the national force requisite in foreign operations and I have described the political constitution of the principal states in Europe at the time when Charles V. began his reign. In this part of my work I have been led into several critical disquisitions, which belong more properly to the province of the lawyer or antiquary than to that of the historian. These I have placed at the end of the first volume, under the title of Proofs and Illustrations. Many of my readers will, probably, give little attention to such researches. To some they may, perhaps, appear the most curious and interesting part of the work. I have carefully pointed out the sources from which I have derived information, and have cited the writers on whose authority I rely with a minute exactness, which might appear to border upon ostentation, if it were possible to be vain of having read books, many of which nothing but the duty of examining with accuracy whatever I laid before the public, could have induced me to open. As my inquiries conducted me often into paths which were obscure or little frequented, such constant references to the authors who have been my guides, were not only necessary for authenticating the facts which are the foundations of my reasonings, but may be  useful in pointing out the way to such as shall hereafter hold the same course, and in enabling them to carry on their researches with greater facility and success. Every intelligent reader will observe one omission in my work, the reason of which it is necessary to explain. I have given no account of the conquests of Mexico and Peru, or of the establishment of the Spanish colonies in the continent and islands of America. The history of these events I originally intended to have related at considerable length. But, upon a nearer and more attentive consideration of this part of my plan, I found that the discovery of the New World; the state of society among its ancient inhabitants; their character, manners, and arts; the genius of the European settlements in its various provinces, together with the influence of these upon the systems of policy or commerce in Europe, were subjects so splendid and important, that a superficial view of them could afford little satisfaction; and, on the other hand, to treat of them as extensively as they merited, must produce an episode, disproportionate to the principal work. I have therefore reserved these for a separate history ; which, if the performance now offered to the public shall receive its approbation, I purpose to  undertake.Though, by omitting such considerable but detached articles in the reign of Charles V. *I have circumscribed my narration within more narrow limits, I am yet persuaded, from this view of the intention and nature of the work which I thought it necessary to lay before my readers, that  the planmust still appear to them too extensive, and the undertaking too arduous. I have often felt them to be so. But my conviction of the utility of such a history prompted me to persevere. With what success I have executed it, the public must now judge. I wait, not without solicitude, for its decision, to which I shall submit with a respectful silence.
